While Torres del Paine and Patagonia have become world-famous for their dramatic landscapes and the pumas that live in them, our tour will offer you just a bit more than others. We focus on pumas and their role in the ecosystem and will follow these enigmatic cats during the day and nighttime. We use thermal cameras to follow the pumas during hours of low light and try to show you all the fascinating behaviors that make these cats so interesting. As an ultimate highlight, we will try to witness live hunting and see social interactions between the pumas. Additionally, you can expect breathtaking landscapes and a range of interesting species, such as the guanaco, skunk, Geoffrey’s cat, South American grey fox, Andean condor, and king penguins, during a special excursion. Not only will we observe and photograph the pumas, but we will also learn a great deal about their behavior, guided by a carnivore specialist in conservation biology. The puma tracking will be done from the vehicle and on foot; moderate fitness is required if participants want to hike, but the hikes are not necessary to see the pumas. We choose to do our puma tracking tours in May because of the relatively low numbers of tourists in the park around that time and favorable weather conditions.
Torres del Paine is located in the far south of Chile, and, with almost 2000km2, is home to over 50 pumas. The park and surrounding areas are a conservation success story, and many of the privately owned ranches have moved from sheep farming (and killing pumas) to eco-tourism, in which the pumas are beneficial to the ranchers and now receive protection.

Is this trip for you?
- If you’re seeking a very good chance to see a puma in the wild and learn everything about the species, then this trip might be perfect for you!
- You love nature and spotting wildlife, mammals in particular.
- You would like to go on a trip that has been completely mapped out in advance, so you can fully immerse yourself in the experience.
tour dates - up next: autumn 2025
- Thursday 8th of May - Monday 19th of May 2025 (4 spots left, guaranteed departure).
Included: all accommodation, 3 meals a day (one of which might be a lunch package), guide, transport from and to the airport.
Excluded: flights, alcoholic drinks, travel insurance & health insurance.
This trip is conducted in autumn and this means that the conditions are getting cold. Snow is to be expected with temperatures possibly reaching well below zero at night. Winter clothes (bring layers), including a good beanie, scarf, gloves and waterproof shoes/boots are advised.
Apart from sufficient clothing, good gear is essential for the best experience. A decent pair of binoculars (preferably one good in low light conditions) and a decent camera are a must if one wants to take photos. The animals are wild and although close encounters sometimes occur, most wildlife is viewed from a respectable distance. This means that a good lens (300mm or more) is advisable.
We spend many hours in a vehicle during the night, which can be boring at times. Patience and perseverance are essential during this trip and it won’t always be comfortable. But in return you will have a very good chance to see pumas in a breathtaking Patagonia.

Itinerary
Day 1: Pick-up from the airport
Transfer from Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales airport to Torres del Paine including the first spotting session.
Day 2-10: Explore Torres del Paine NP and search for puma
It is difficult to give a day-to-day schedule because of changing weather conditions, and because we are adapting our schedule based on the behavior of the cats. In general, we will have a late-afternoon spotting session from a viewpoint or from the vehicle, followed by a warm dinner in the hotel. After dinner, we will conduct a night drive for several hours, often until midnight or even slightly later. Depending on the activity, success of the spotting session, and the fitness of the clients, we will also head out early mornings (before sunrise), or take it easy and go for another spotting session after breakfast. All activities are optional, but it is highly advised to join all of them for the best chances of encountering pumas. Personal preferences can be catered for if known to us in advance! Because we operate with small groups, and have a flexible program, we can cater for specific interests or wishes. You will be housed at a comfortable hotel, where three meals a day are included. Off time will be offered during most afternoons because the nights are short, and we will have a busy program.
Day 11: Visiting the king penguins
We head towards Tierra del Fuego, also known as the end of the world. This island is home to the southernmost point of South America. Here, we will visit the king penguin colony. During our ferry ride, we will try to spot seabirds like the black-browed albatross and giant-petrels, as well as marine mammals. After we arrive at Tierra del Fuego, we will look for Chilean Flamingo and Magellanic horned owl, before we finally arrive at the penguin colony.
Day 12: Drop-off at the airport
Transfer back to Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas airport after a morning drive (if flight schedules allow it).
